During phone calls, background noise can be a nuisance, especially if you or the person you’re speaking with is in a noisy environment. To address this, iPhones running iOS 16.4 or later have a feature called Voice Isolation, which uses advanced algorithms to isolate your voice and minimize background noise during calls. This can help the person on the other end of the line hear you more clearly, even in noisy environments.
Activating Voice Isolation is a straightforward process. Simply open the FaceTime app (you don’t need to start a call), pull down from the top of the screen to open Control Center, tap the microphone icon at the top right to open the Mic Mode settings, and select Voice Isolation. Alternatively, if you want your iPhone to prioritize background sounds, you can choose the Wide Spectrum option from the Mic Mode menu.
Once you’ve enabled Voice Isolation, you should notice a significant improvement in call quality. Background noise should be greatly reduced, making it easier for you and the person you’re speaking with to hear each other clearly. This can be especially helpful in noisy settings like coffee shops or busy streets.
Keep in mind that while Voice Isolation can be helpful, it may not work perfectly in all situations. In some cases, it may not completely eliminate background noise, especially if it’s very loud or persistent. However, in most cases, it should significantly reduce background noise and improve call quality.
